Woodland Grange Primary School Totem Poles

As part of our Ground Force fortnight in April 2004 the school worked together to create magnificent totem poles to stand in the school grounds. The poles are 3 metres tall.

Each Year Group had a pole and the staff had one too!

Each pole is decorated with pictures and images with an associated meaning or that tell a story....just like traditional totem poles.

For example the Year 3 pole shows a winding path of footprints from the base of the pole to the top.
The footprints get larger as they travel the height of the pole. Along the way the children have painted images of items or events that have been part of their lives or are aspirations for the future.
The pole tells their journey from childhood at the base to their future at the top.

On the Year 1, 2 and 5 pole the children have represented themselves as animals. They have chosen animals with characteristics that they see in themselves.

The Year 4 pole captures expression in faces and the Foundation pole represents the beauty of Mother Nature.

Every child in the school added their own work to their pole. The staff pole is covered in eyes.....!!!!!

Once painted the poles were varnished with yacht varnish.

Builders came and planted the poles for us in the shape of a circle. We all came out to watch.
The circle will be a super place to play or relax.
Come and see them!!!
